On The Road: New Works by Burmese Painter Min Wae Aung
Opens April 2, 2004 at Chouinard Gallery
Chicago, IL – March 1, 2004 – On The Road, an exhibition of oil and acrylic on canvas by Burmese artist, Min Wae Aung will be presented from April 2, 2004 through May 31, 2004 at Chouinard Gallery, 3025 North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. The opening reception, sponsored by Grey Goose, will be held at the gallery on Friday, April 2 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The reception will be attended by the artist and is free and open to the public.
On The Road is a collection of calm yet purposeful groups of Buddhist monks and nuns advancing in orderly procession across limitless sand dunes. These are the Buddhist monks and nuns of Burma’s monasteries that provide the inspiration for the vibrant works of Min Wae Aung.
Dressed in vivid traditional Burmese monastic robes, the figures are typically shown walking away from the viewer. Whether in dazzling sunlight or a tropical rain, the monks are protecting themselves with wide parasols. Such images allow Min Wae Aung to exploit the full spectrum of color – from rose-pink through coral, magenta and crimson, ochre and russet hues – as well as the play of light and shadow of the flowing folds of fabric.
Much of Min Wae Aung’s work is inspired by rural life in Burma. Here, ancient villages retain customs and beliefs that date back thousands of years. Because the monks are depicted in a void, carrying on age-old traditions as generations of monks have done for centuries, the figures become iconic, epitomizing the Buddhist idea of the eternal repetition of life cycles.
Min Wae Aung studied traditional landscape painting at the State School of Fine Art in Rangoon. However, experience working as a commercial graphic artist and a visit to the US in 1993 led him to progress towards a more contemporary, graphic style.
On the Road will also be on exhibit in San Francisco and New York. Images are available at www.canvasia.com.
