Prominent Hong Kong Art Gallery to Open in Chicago on June 6th
Chouinard Gallery Will Feature Indonesian Artist I Gusti Ngurah Buda
for its Inaugural Exhibition
Chicago, IL – June 2, 2003 – Chouinard Gallery announces its opening exhibition featuring contemporary mixed media paintings by celebrated Indonesian artist, I Gusti Ngurah Buda. The exhibition will open on Friday, June 6th, 2003 at 3025 North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago and will continue through July 16th, 2003. A cocktail reception will be held from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6th. The reception is free and open to the public.
Chouinard Gallery’s opening exhibit will feature a series of abstract paintings by I Gusti Ngurah Buda, which juxtapose urban and rural life. The geometric shapes in Buda’s work represent buildings, windows and doors, which overlap more fluid elements, which represent nature. This dichotomy represents two sides to Buda’s character. The geometric shapes reflect the artist’s more refined and meticulous character whereas the flowing elements reflect his sense of freedom and expressive qualities. Like most Balinese, he is a Hindu and his paintings depict peace and other Hindu sensibilities for nature.
Chouinard Gallery was originally opened by Patrick Chouinard in 2000 in Hong Kong after he discovered the extraordinary talent throughout Indonesia, China, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia. Chouinard choose Chicago for the gallery’s first North American location because of its influential art landscape and prominent position in the world art community.
Chouinard Gallery is the first Asian gallery located in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. The gallery will feature additional exhibitions throughout the summer including exhibitions from Indonesian painter Wayan Karja and Thai painter, Thaiwijit Poengkasemsomboon. All are welcome to visit the gallery Tuesday – Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. Or visit www.chouinardgallery.com.
