Xiao Hong was born in Huhehot, Inner Mongolia in 1966. He graduated
from the Inner Mongolia Education Institute majoring in Arts. In
1990 he entered his first oil painting exhibition and subsequently
became a committee member of the Inner Mongolia Artist
Association. In 1991 Xiao Hong was referred to the Lu Xun Academy
of Art by the Association and studied under Mr. Claude Yeevier, a
surrealist painter, from whom he learned realism oil painting skills,
which he later helped promote within Inner Mongolian art circles.
In
1993, Xiao Hong studied at the Central Art Academy specializing in
decorative art and wall painting whilst gaining tremendous exposure to
ancient Chinese art. From the experience, Xiao Hong aspired to
create his own distinctive style, reflected first in his 'Nurtured
People' series. In 1995, Xiao Hong established a strong presence
in the industry through his participation in the Eighth National
Art Exhibition and other similar significant Chinese exhibitions.
In 1996 he became a professional painter and moved to Beijing where he
painted the "Road to Heaven" series - a stunning, simplistic
collection of landscapes, and participated in many art functions and
exhibitions.
In
1999 he represented The Inner Mongolia Artist Association in the Ninth
National Art Exhibition where he won an "Excellence
Award". His "Road to Heaven" exhibition toured
through Japan, after which it become part of the China National Art
Museum's permanent collection.
